I’ve been meaning to blog this topic for a long while now, but with the busyness of wedding season, and actually SHOOTING engagement sessions- this blog post continually got pushed back on my blog post radar- which I’m cutting myself some slack on because- this is actually the perfect time to talk about this very topic- WHY an engagement session?
I get this question fairly often- maybe not verbatim but it usually comes when I get inquiries and we start talking pricing. Engagement photography sessions seem to be the first questionable inclusion to all my packages- and the seemingly best way to cut costs and remove the session as a whole. And my answer 9.5 times out of 10 is no- and here’s WHY!
1. Getting to know YOU:
There is a reason this is number one on the list- because it is paramount in my reasoning behind making engagement shoots complimentary to your wedding experience! The absolute best way to get to know someone- is to meet in person. I’m a HUGE people person and love to talk and tell stories (just ask my husband)- and I want to talk to YOU! I want to hear your stories, especially your love story…and I want to see it! Engagement sessions give us that time, with NO wedding day rush to get to know each other. OH I’ll absolutely talk to you and tell stories on your wedding day- but I’ll already have a bunch in my back pocket- and we’ll already have inside jokes before you know it
2. Practice makes Perfect:
And the old cliché rings true! Because it is. Some people are freaking NATURALS in front of the camera- and…I am not one of them. But with some practice, and feeling comfortable with someone you KNOW (hint hint point one) : it becomes second nature. You realize that you’re just on a date with your sweet spouse-to-be, with a fun-loving little lady with a big camera following you (totally normal)But really- I want your engagement session to feel like a date- because it is! It’s a chance to snuggle up with the person you love most- and this way when it comes time for your wedding day with maybe a little bit of a rushed timeline- it’s all good! Because you are naturals.
3. MORE is MORE:
I’m definitely one of those who believes the opposite of that above statement- but in this instance, it’s true. This is a time for you to get MORE portraits of you two- for your new place together! It’s not everyday you dress in a wedding gown and tuxedo- so this is a time for you to be you in the truest way. To pick a location that is special to you both, and be the everyday YOUs that you fell in love with.
4. They’re my favorite:
They tell you not to pick favorites, but engagement photography sessions are mine. Please don’t let that lead you to believe I don’t LOVE weddings- because I absolutely do. But I am in this business because I love people, I love sweet love, and I love the privilege of being invited into such a special time of life. Engagement photography sessions are like my engagement party- the time where I get invited to this incredibly sweet season of your life- and we get to take pictures to celebrate (and maybe eat a cupcake or something if you want to do your e-session downtown)
So for all my 2015 Brides who haven’t had their engagement session yet- GET EXCITED! And for any of you thinking about booking but hoping to forgo the engagement session- GET EXCITED- because I’m not gonna let you sneak out of the opportunity for a date night with your soon to be spouse- all captured by yours truly!
Happy Thursday, friends!
