A Week in Review: Shutdown

This week has been a little strange. As some of you may not know- I work full-time for the government aside from my photography moonlighting;)But this week, I got a taste of what it would be to be a full-time photographer, because…as you do know- the government was SHUTDOWN! Aka: no full-time govy job for me!

All political opinions aside- it was definitely an adjustment to live life for a week without a 9-5. I have become SO used to having my job occupy my days, that it was so different to have those hours free…

I used a lot of those hours to focus a ton on this passion of mine (photography)- but I also was able to use some of this newfound freedom to have some adventures of my own…and it was a huge blessing. Above is a look at my shutdown week in review as seen through instagram:)

Some highlights:

– Spending a little bit of time with my sweet niece. It’s amazing to me how much she changes each week, and how I love her more each day!

– Having time to take advantage of a gym membership!

– Exploring Sugarloaf Mountain area with Joey:)

– Exhausting the red box supply. Seriously, I think we have watched almost every movie that is worth watching in that big red contraption.

– My amazing friend Jen’s bridal shower! Cutest DIY mustache shower. I can’t wait to share it with you guys this week!

– mmm Apple Crisp and other baking goodness (it’s dangerous being unemployed: you eat more)

– Watching the sunset with Joey at the Montgomery County Airpark: This is one of my new favorite spots!

AND it looks like I may have another full week without a 9-5 filling my days…More adventure awaits!

Before I go, the winner from the LAUNCH DAY GIVEAWAY is HEIDI TUCKER! Send me your info, Heidi, and I’ll have that UO Gift Card to you in the mail!

The Branding Journey

SO here it is- DAY TWO of the new brand, and bah-dah-bing, bah-dah-booom- here I am blogging two days in a row! Not a big deal for most photographers, but a huge deal for me!

With this new brand I have a new found desire to SHARE! I finally have a space that I’m proud of- so by golly, I’m gonna use it! Blogging consistency is on its way, my friends!

I wanted to share a bit about how I finally got to this place- particularly the branding journey from my point of view. I’ve read many a blog post about this from my fellow photographers, and I always LOVE hearing their story. I’m so excited that I can finally share mine!

I’ve now been “in business” for a couple of years now, and it took me quite some time to realize how incredibly important it is to have a specific and unique BRAND as a photographer. I’ve always thought branding was only for those BIG companies that everyone knows about. You know “those” companies- Nike, McDonalds, Coca-Cola– the ones that you can name their logo and slogan without even thinking. But, my goodness, was I wrong. Through reading my favorite photographer’s blogs and looking through their websites- I began to realize that they had a BRAND- an identity. And all of these photographers’ businesses were THRIVING- and of COURSE I wanted that! So I began to research: website platforms, blogsites, and designers.

After much prayer, scoping and emailing- I found the PERFECT designer for me. Not only was her personal website the cutest, but her email was the sweetest. I could tell that she had handwritten and thoughtfully crafted my email for ME- I cannot even tell you how many designers I emailed who gave me a semi-automated response. IMMEDIATELY after my first email with Julie, I knew she was an answer to prayer! Julie was an INSTANT encouragement to me personally and for my business and her excitement for my brand was SO genuine- I knew I had to hire this amazing woman!

The beginning steps of the branding journey were so much fun, but so much harder than I thought! And when things are difficult…I tend to procrastinate. I took forever to get all my preliminary ducks in a row- but thankfully, Julie was SO patient with me! Quickly I realized that branding equals SOUL searching…Identifying WHO you are, so that you can translate that into a cohesive brand. A TREMENDOUSLY rewarding experience when it’s all said and done:)

Pinterest, pinterest, pinterest. What a gift to creative souls around the world! Pinning was such an awesome tool in the branding process! I may have over-pinned…but through pinterest I was able to start putting my ideas into an organized visual representation of my dreams for my brand. I knew that I wanted something whimsical, playful, and light- something that represented my free spirit. Pinterest helped me gather my thoughts and find new ideas- and it was a blast! Here’s a look at my beginning pinnings!

After pinning fonts, textures, fashions, and things that make me smile– Julie took my discombobulated pins and turned them into a coherent inspiration board that looked like this!:

And from there, the branding took flight! My new logo was created first! I’ve always LOVED the freeness of the dandelion, and wanted to keep that in my logo- with a new freshness, and Julie came up with the perfect design!SarahBethFinal

Then the drafting of the website came- and honestly…there was really only one or two drafts! Julie got it on TARGET right away. I remember opening the email with the attachment to the draft of the website- and not being able to contain my excitement. I squealed and flailed my arms- I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be able to SEE a brand come to LIFE. Truly a spectacular feeling.

And that feeling!? STILL got it. I’m so thankful for this experience- and for this brand!

Adventure most definitely awaits!
